More About Residential Solar Attic fans
Solar powered attic fans can be roughly classified into two major performance categories: 10 watt fans and 20 watt or greater solar attic attic fans. The 10 watt solar attic fans are typically less expensive, but only move a maximum of 850 CFM of airflow. These are the solar attic fans that you will typically find at your local discount building supply stores. These fans are great for ventilating small attic areas up to a maximum attic space of about 1200 square feet under ideal conditions.
However since the majority of residential attics are larger than 1200 square feet and given that conditions are not always ideal, it is usually necessary to install multiple 10 watt solar attic fans to meet the specific Ventilation Requirements of your home. This means more roof penetrations, as well as more costs when installing the 10 watt fans on attic spaces larger than 1200 square feet. In addition, the 10 watt solar panels used to power these units are typically not made with high efficiency solar cells and often do not work well on cloudy or partly cloudy days.
The higher powered 20 watt solar attic fans that are available through various manufacturers are typically rated to move a maximum of 1250 CFM of airflow. While more expensive than the 10 watt models, these fans have the capacity to adequately ventilate an attic space of up to roughly 1700-1800 square feet. For residential attics in the 1200-1800 square foot area range, a 20 watt solar attic fan is the appropriate ventilation choice.
